With the small size of Jamaica, it’s hard to imagine that there would be as much interesting architectural structures as there are. One of the oldest and most interesting structures in the Flat Bridge, which is believed to have been constructed by the Spanish sometime before the year 1724.

The history of the bridge is an interesting one. The first bridge is thought to have been built from logs, but since that section of Jamaica receives heavy rainfall each year, the bridge was washed away. History claims that slaves were made to rebuild the bridge, and that it was then rebuilt a third time with bricks and other materials that could handle the heavy rainfalls and raging floodwaters.

Whenever it rains, it’s nearly impossible to get across the bridge. While it’s known that the bridge is very dangerous during the rainy season, people will still attempt to get across. Many accidents occur every year, most of which result in death.

The bridge is even believed to be haunted. Legend has it that on every Good Friday, ghosts of the salves who drowned in the Rio Cobre River gather there. People have reported seeing other entities there as well. There are several more interesting place in Jamaica. Use canada 411 as a guide to learn about the different places you can visit there.

The rains and subsequent floodwaters have helped create some very interesting rock formations near the Flat Bridge. One of the most popular is called Pum Rock, and is a formation that has the appearance of female genitalia. What’s really interesting is that on the opposite side of the river, there is another rock formation that looks like male genitalia, most of which has been cut away because of dangers to vehicles passing by.

Jamaica makes for one of the best travel destinations out there. People come from around the world to enjoy the culture, food and the warm weather. However, this country does have somewhat of a wide weather pattern. It is because of this that many travelers have to monitor when they come to the country.

When to Visit

When is the best time to visit Jamaica? There are many ways to pick and choose the right location. It is a good idea to plan your trip around the weather. Staying up to date on weather conditions is important.

Overall, Jamaica offers a year round comfortable climate. This means that throughout the year, the country’s overall climate is pleasant. This does not mean, though, that there are not better times to visit.

For those who want to save money on travel, visit Jamaica in the off season. This is about the middle of April through the middle of December. This is the most affordable time to visit the country because prices are lower.

Perhaps the worst time to visit is spring break. This is generally a period of time during the month of March through the middle of April.

If you plan to come to the country, make it a destination vacation. This means investing in travel at any time of the year, but staying at resorts and planning your trip around the various activities taking place in the country. You will find a wide range of activities well worth investing in when you arrive, too.

The sentencing for Grammy-award winning reggae artist Buju Banton is set for Thursday, according to the Jamaica Observer. Banton will be sentenced in the Sam M. Gibbons Federal Court in Tampa, Florida after he was convicted of drug-related charges four months ago.

Friends and relatives of the artist, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, are concerned about the welfare of the singers 15 children. Several weeks ago well-known actors, athletes, and his children made pleas for leniency when handing down his sentence. American actor Danny Glover and fellow reggae artist Stephan Marley were among the one’s asking for leniency.

Cover of Buju Banton

This conviction comes after a trial in September 2010 when jurors could not reach a verdict. Banton was arrested in December 2009 after a covert drug operation. He was convicted of distributing cocaine five kilos or more, possession of a firearm to be used in the trafficking of drugs, and using the wires to facilitate the drug trafficking offense. The maximum sentence for these convictions is 15 years. His legal team is seeking a lesser sentence. His family and friends are hoping for a sentence less than the mandatory minimum.

His legal team is suggesting that he had limited participation in the drug operation. This coupled with his charitable works and having a clean record entitles him to a lesser sentence than the mandatory minimum of 15 years. There was some concern over the Federal Judge in Florida pushing his June 16 sentencing to June 23, his family thinks that may be a bad sign but can’t be sure.

Crime is a big problem for Jamaica, especially in large city centers like Montego Bay or the capital of Kingston. Violent crime is especially prevalent. Such crimes can damage the moral of not only residents, but also visitors. Jamaica has a booming tourist trade, and in an effort to quash the factors that threaten it, the government recently came down hard on local gangs.

During the first 90 days of 2010, Jamaica had 426 murders occur. The government took a leaf from Brazil’s book and began to confront drug dealers and gangs on their own turf, bring in platoons of soldiers and squads of policemen to blanket crime-ridden areas. By increasing an armed presence, crime is decreasing, as evidenced by 2011′s numbers: in the first three months of this year, only 238 people were murdured. While still terrible, the government has touted this 44% drop in the murder rate as evidence that it’s strategy is working. Parts of Kingston have seen as much as a 60% drop in violent crimes.

However, not everyone is happy about this. Various groups complain that the government is isolating the population and that there have been increased instances of abuse propagated by soldiers. In 2009, 253 civilians were killed. The following year, 400 innocents were killed. Jamaicans for Justice, a civil rights group, is upset that the government is making their presence known in such a martial manner. Jamaica still has a long way to go, but with soldiers down on the corner, residents are safer than they were.

The birthplace of seven genres of music and reggae legend Bob Marley, the small country of Jamaica has been a huge world influence in both music and culture. If you plan on vacationing in Jamaica, why not try to hit some of the main music events during the year? No matter what time you visit during the year, a musical event is just around the corner.

Since the festival is held in June, which is jazz month, over 30 different jazz music events are happening throughout the Jamaica Islands. Once you hear the Jamaican jazz, you’ll definitely want to check out a moving company quote and never leave Jamaica again!

In August, take part in the week long Reggae Sumfest. You can go on a budget and get a one-day pass, weekend pass, week long pass or splurge and get a backstage pass. No matter which one you choose, it’ll be an event you’ll never forget.

So, pack your bags and bring your sunscreen and get ready to enjoy the age old sound of the Jamaican Islands.

When people think of vacation they often think of cruises or beach vacations. However, there are many different types of vacations you can go on. A ski trip can be a very fun and exciting vacation. When you are on a ski trip, it doesn’t have to be limited to just skiing. Most times there are other activities you can do as well, such as canoeing, white water rafting, fishing, ice-skating, etc.

One amazing place for a ski trip is in France. France is the number one place in the world for skiing. If you’re looking to Ski France, one great area is Three Valleys, which is the world’s biggest ski area. There are also other amazing ski areas in France, and over half of them are in the world’s top ten largest ski areas. French ski areas are also affordable, and can be enjoyed by your whole family!

If you enjoy exciting outdoor activities, then a ski trip would be a great way to spend your vacation. You can ski early in the morning and go all day if you want to! Ski trips are a great way to spend time with your family or, if you want, to just have fun by yourself. You can either bring your own equipment or rent some when you are staying at a ski resort. You will be able to find everything you need and renting the equipment won’t be very expensive. Skiing is one of the most popular and most exciting winter activities for you and your family to enjoy.

The national government has come to a head as the struggle continues to balance the federal budget. The impact of this shutdown would mean widespread federal employees, around 800,000, will be furloughed for a period of time when nonessential government offices are closed. Though they will not be paid during this time period, Congress can choose to pay them retroactively. This would continue until the government is able to come to an agreement and vote on the budget.

One of the primary portions of the federal government that would be closed for a period of time is the National Park System. National parks across the country are one of the primary summer destinations for many travelers and their closing will put a crimp in travel plans. Other popular destinations such as the many museums in the Smithsonian would also be closed during this period. The government does plan to keep essential offices open, including law enforcement. This event highlights the many concerns that have been voiced over the continued battles that continue to occur in Congress.

The government has stated that current beneficiaries of Social Security will receive their checks during this period. Taxpayers are encouraged to e-file their returns to the IRS as paper returns may not be processed if the government has to shut down until a compromise is reached. The American public and the many federal workers who will be affected by this shutdown wait to see if a compromise can be reached in a timely manner before the shutdown occurs.

Even with the economy’s downturn, many people need time to enjoy each other’s company and take a break from it all with a fun vacation for the whole family. But taking a vacation — which usually includes plane trips, hotel rooms, food, and entertainment costs — with the entire family can be costly, and some families may feel like a “Stay-cation” or day trips may be the only options they have when planning a vacation on a budget.

Family vacations can still be carefree, affordable luxuries if you consider a family-friendly cruise. Cruises are some of the most versatile vacation options around. Choose to stay close by with short cruises, or take a trip around the Caribbean or other exotic locales with a longer cruise option. It’s a great way to see the most popular parts of Jamaica. Your family has the option of visiting several different places in just one trip on a cruise, and since cruises usually travel while you’re sleeping, you won’t have to worry about spending most of your vacation on an airplane or in airports.

Taking a cruise for your family vacation also has the benefit of including most of the usual costs associated with going out of town. Your travel, accommodations, food, and most drinks are usually included in the price of the cruise itself. While there are also excursions you can pay extra to enjoy, there is usually plenty of entertainment on cruise ships, meaning your family members can decide how they want to spend the day but still have dinner together. Learn how to book a family cruise and enjoy your next vacation.

If you’re a history buff and are planning a trip to Jamaica, be sure to include a trip to Spanish Town in your list of places to visit and sights to see. Listed as a World Heritage Site and filled to the brim with rich history, Spanish Town is sure to satisfy the curiosity of any history lover. Founded in 1534, the community was primarily Spanish until the British overtook the country in 1655.

Many of the building built at the founding of the town are still standing today. One of the oldest is the Cathedral Church of St. James, which was established back in 1714. The King’s House and the Court House are just as old and are frequented by tourists. Plans are in the works for renovations and rebuilding of these landmarks to keep them available to tourists. Redevelopment plans are being developed for the rest of the town as well.

If you’d like to find accommodations near Spanish Town, you’ll find plenty. The city of Kingston is a few miles away and offers such options as Jamaica Pegasus. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, try the Village Hotel in Ocho Rios. These are just two of the hotel options you have, as Jamaica has always been known for its variety of lodgings.

As far as activities go, there are a number to choose from in Spanish Town. Visit the Tain Museum and learn about the first inhabitants of the country. If you’re a golf aficionado, stop at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club a short distance away in St. Catherine. Finally, if you’re one who has a penchant for nightlife, be sure to check out the Jamaica Pegasus 9if you’re not staying there). The hotel offers nightly live entertainment.

Aside from the beaches and associated resorts in Jamaica, one of the most popular tourist destinations is Ocho Rios. Not just the beaches or Dolphin Cave, but the “inner” side of the resort city. If you want to experience something different and spend a day away from the ocean and beaches, read on for a few suggestions for other sites to see within Ocho Rios.

Check out the dog sled tours at Chukka Cove Farm. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need snow and cold temperatures to have fun on a dog sled. For a scenic tour of the local countryside, just hop on the sled and the dogs will do the rest. You’ll learn about how Jamaicans got involved in the sport and can even see where the film “Papillion” was shot.

Give the attractions at Mystic Mountain a try. One of the most popular rides here is the Rainforest Bobsled. Moved about on a zip line, this attraction will take you on a scenic tour through the canopy of the rainforest and down to a platform near a waterfall. The trip is nearly vertical—something to keep in mind, especially if you have a weak stomach.

Take a trip up the North Coast Highway and see the Green Grotto Caves. Located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, these caves are filled with history. In 1665, the Spanish hid in them as the British overtook Jamaica. The Taino Indians also used the caves as dwellings. The caves have many unique formations and in the middle of the caves is Grotto Lake.

These are just three of the unique sites that Ocho Rios has to offer. If you’re tired of the beach, take a look around. You never know what you might find.

While Ocho Rios and Kingston are some of the favored resort cities in Jamaica, Port Antonio offers tourists some of the best attractions and most exclusive resorts in the country. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th Century, the port is located on the northeastern end of Jamaica. By the late 1800s, the British had taken over the island and Port Antonio had become the banana capital of the entire world. With that title, cam throngs of tourists.

While other sites like Montego Bay are more popular with tourists today, Port Antonio remains a low-key location where many Jamaican natives can stay at a luxury hotel to relax and get away from the crowds in the more popular places. Celebrities “hide out” here as well. The port has played host to the likes of Denzel Washington and Bette Davis, among others.

Port Antonio offers lodgings for just about everyone, whether you’re solo, with your significant other, or on vacation with your family. Some interesting places to look into include Capricorn House, Jamaica Palace Hotel, and the Tranquility Villa. Like the options for lodging, your options for food and entertainment are just as plentiful. Some exciting dinner options include Anna Bananas, a seafront restaurant, and San San Tropez. If you’re looking for fresh-baked bread or other bakery items, stop in at the Coronation Bakery.

Considered to be the “heart and soul” of Jamaica, Port Antonio offers the same level of attractions and dining as the other resort cities, but without the big crowds, full beaches, and wait times at restaurants. If you’re looking for a laid back and quiet Jamaican experience, Port Antonio should be at the top of your list.

It’s no secret that most people who spend their vacations in Jamaica do so because of the world-renowned Oceanside resorts, the sun, and the bright blue ocean. Others make the trip for not only those things, but also to do some sight seeing in cities like Kingston and Ocho Rios. These locations are home to some of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, such as Dunns Rover Falls and Emancipation Park. If you’re not one for long lines or crowds, or just want a day away from the bustle of the beach, take a look at the list below for some alternative sights!

Check out Mystic Mountain. This is rapidly becoming a popular alternative to Dunns River Falls. Take a nearly vertical zip line tour of the rainforest canopy or take a ride on the bobsled coaster, a tourist favorite. You can even explore the forest on foot if you want, as there are numerous walking/hiking trails.

Learn all about reggae music at the Reggae Explosion Museum. Reggae music a huge part of the Jamaican culture and was made world famous by icon Bob Marley. Listen to a multitude of songs, learn about musicians, and even see a replica reggae bar.

Spend some time at one of Jamaica’s best-kept secret locations: the Parish of Portland. This is where the people in Kingston and Ocho Rios go to get away from tourists for a little while. Boasting an eco-friendly lodging called Great Huts, the Parish of Portland hosts Boston, the original birthplace of jerk seasoning. The restaurant serves the best jerk chicken and pork around, and they do so out of large drums full of the food. Nearby attractions are Winifred Beach and Frenchman’s Cove, both of which include all the beauty of the regular beaches, but with far fewer people.

If you’re looking for a place to “get away” while on your getaway to Jamaica, try one of the places listed above. You won’t be disappointed.

Maldives is a group of atolls (coral reef islands) located in the Indian Ocean in the southern part of Asia. The chain of islands, known as the Maldives Islands, are actually the highest of a huge underwater mountain range called the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge. The Maldives territory encompasses over 90,000 square kilometers, which makes it one of the more isolated countries in the world.

It is no surprise that this beautiful group of islands have become a popular destination for vacations, weddings and honeymoons over the past few years. The lush green of the islands are surrounded by the turquoise blue water of the Indian Ocean and white sandy beaches.

If you choose to take a luxury maldives holidays vacation in this beautiful area, you will find a beautiful tropical location with many things to do. One of the most intriguing things in Maldives is to go diving. Maldives has some of the most assorted marine fauna and plants in the world as well as some of the most beautiful coral reefs anywhere. There are thousands of dive sites throughout the islands that only a fraction of them have actually been dived to and they are so close together you can actually swim from one site to another.

If diving is not your cup of tea, maybe some of the other water sports that are offered will be more to your liking. The most admired water sports are windsurfing, snorkeling and catamaran sailing. Each resort is equipped with rental equipment and the water sport centers also have trainers on hand to teach you the proper techniques, making your stay safer and more enjoyable.

If you are looking at the Maldives Islands for your honeymoon, you may not have to look any further. A honeymoon in Maldives offers you luxury treatment with a seductive seclusion for that romantic getaway. Many of the resorts on the Islands offer private bungalows where you and your partner can enjoy each other without being disturbed.

It’s no secret that Jamaica offers a host of new experiences and fun activities for vacationers and tourists—and that’s if you can tear yourself away from the beach! With activities ranging from rock climbing and rafting to mini golf and food tours, it might be hard to see everything you want while in Jamaica. If you’re one who appreciates the wide range of gorgeous scenery that the country has to offer, then be sure you take the time to stop in at Emancipation Park in New Kingston.

Emancipation Park, which opened back in 2002, is as rich with history as with scenery. A strong tribute to the many slaves that are such a huge part of Jamaica’s culture and history, the park is an enormous piece of the national pride that is so evident throughout the country.

The design of the area is spectacular in itself, but the historic story that is told through the water fountains, sculptures, and statues is truly something to behold.

At the entrance of the park, you’ll see two-headed crocodiles, which signify the mix of the Jamaican people. These sit right below the name of the park, which has significant meaning as well. The word “emancipation” means freedom.

Artist Laura Facey constructed the focal point of the park, which is a large statue of a nude man and woman. Water flows over the top of the base of the statue and was influenced by the “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley. The flowers in the park add to its charm and include the national flower (the Lignum Vitae), as well as the Blue Mahoe and the Royal Palm, among others.

Emancipation Park is an iconic piece of Jamaica’s history, even though it’s relatively new. Stop in and see it!

Ah, the honeymoon. This is the one best times in any married couples life. Everything is fresh and new, and all of the possibilities are still ahead. For an occasion this special, you want to go somewhere equally special; some place warm; some place sexy and fun. Some place like Jamaica.

Jamaica is perfect for the honeymooning couples. There are full service resorts that line the sparking beaches. Whether you want to spend your honeymoon basking in the sun and sand, or locked in your room with your one true love, Jamaica offers the perfect destination.

Jamaica is such an attractive destination for honeymooning couples thanks to its stunning scenery. It has gorgeous beaches and lush rainforests. There are mountains and crystal clear Caribbean waters. It has the type of views you will literally want to write home about. Make sure you send your family and friends pretty postcards back home; that way you can rub in the great time you’re having, complete with a picture of the scenery they are missing.

No matter how you want to spend your honeymoon, consider one of the many luxury Jamaican resorts. There are big names like Sandals, Breezes, Hedonism and Montego Bay. They are large and all-inclusive, and appeal to people who want to lounge around in complete luxury. For those who want a little more adventure along with a healthy dose of local color, consider a smaller villa. The smaller villas offer many more opportunities to explore more than the beaches while still maintaining the type of scenery you will find on any postcards in any shop on the island.

However you choose to honeymoon, clearly Jamaica is the place to relax with the one you love. A place as romantic as Jamaica will please you almost anywhere you go.

Destination weddings have grown immensely in popularity over the last ten years or so. People are saying “I do” everywhere from Aruba to Punta Cana to Jamaica. Tropical weddings in Jamaica are popular because everything can be done in one spot, making it that much easier. If you and your significant other are planning to have your big day in Jamaica, be aware of the things that you have to do in order for it to go off with a hitch.

There are two main requirements when planning to tie the knot in Jamaica. The first is that you have to be on the island for, at the very least, twenty-four hours before your wedding day. The second is that you need to contact the Ministry of National Security and Justice in Kingston to acquire a marriage license. It should be noted that this process generally takes up to one month to be completed, so make sure you allow enough time before your planning to be wed.

When getting in touch with the Ministry of National Security and Justice regarding a marriage license, it’s always best to do so in person. There are certain documents that you have to present and fees that have to be paid before a license is granted. These include:

Birth certificates proving citizenship for the bride and groom. These must include the father’s name.

If either person has been through a divorce, a record of that divorce is required.

If either has person has lost a previous spouse, a death certificate must be presented.

If the bride or groom is under eighteen years of age, a signed letter of consent from parents is required.

A record of the full names, job titles, marital statuses, and the local address for both the bride and groom is required.

While Jamaica is known for its white sandy beaches, cool blue ocean, and fabulous sea-side resorts, the country is also known for its spicy and flavorsome cuisine. Some of the most popular dishes include jerk chicken and pork, as well as pepper-pot soup and ackee, which is Jamaica’s national food. If you’re interested in all that Jamaica has to offer as far as spices, food, and drink go, there are numerous tours you can take while on your vacation.

One of the most popular food tours among tourists is the Walkerswood Jerk Country Tour held in Ocho Rios. Lasting an entire hour, participants can see the Walkserwood site and walk through the various spice gardens. A stop at the “jerk pit” allows for sampling of as many as 21 of the delicacies that the company produces. There is also a gift shop filled with Walkerswood jerk sauces, as well as cookbooks. The company is one of the leading producers of jerk sauces and other products and its company site spans over seven acres.

Jamaica’s is the leading producer of rum—that’s no secret. If you’re interested in learning more about the many drinks that the country has to offer, then give the rum tour at Appleton Estate a try. The estate is one of Jamaica’s most popular distilleries and offers tours multiple time each day. The tour will run you $80, but when it’s over, you get to take a bottle of the estate’s famous rum home with you. In addition, you’ll learn about the distillery, the estate history, and about the entire process of making and bottling the rum.

These are just two of the most popular food and drink tours in Jamaica. If food is your thing, then you’ll be in luck. There are other tours and no shortage of restaurants for you to try out. A quick Internet search will offer up a list if you want to plan ahead a bit.

Choose a Secluded Getaway for Two!

Although this sounds expensive, you can actually rent a luxury home on this island complete with a full staff for about the same price as a hotel room in other countries.
Set the Scene!

On the night you plan on asking for her hand in marriage, create the perfect setting by letting the staff in on your plans! The friendly people of Negril will be more than willing to help make this the most romantic night of your life! Take her hand and lead her down the moonlit beach to gaze at the stars reflecting over the gentle ocean waters. As you return, she’ll be pleasantly surprised by the twinkling candles surrounding the patio. Sit down toa romantic dinner complete with a glass or two of her favorite wine. As you get down on one knee and present her withone of thebreathtaking platinum Tacori engagement rings, how could she possibly say no?

When planning your vacation to Jamaica, don’t forget to visit Ocho Rios, which is very close to many of the island’s most popular tourists spots and natural island highlights. One of the most popular destinations within Ocho Rios is the Coyaba River Gardens where you can learn about the country’s plant life and other agricultural histories.

While the beach and resorts on the island are considered paradise by many tourists, the Coyaba Gardens offer the same feeling. With numerous walkways, various colorful flowers and plants, and plentiful waterfalls, the gardens are becoming a favorite place for those who don’t enjoy the beach that much. Because most people prefer the beach, the Coyaba Gardens are far less crowded and offer activities such as rock climbing at the waterfalls.

In the vicinity of the gardens is a small museum. Inside, you can learn about Jamaica’s colorful history, as well as the Taino Indians who were the very first inhabitants of the island. The Taino were written about by Spanish Explorers and were still living on the island when slavery was abolished.

Close to the museum is Ysassis Point, which offers perhaps the best view of the rest of Ocho Rios in the country. From this location, you can see everything from the natural hills all the way down to the waterfront where many ships dock every day. On a clear day, Ysassis Point offers one of the best photo opportunities you’ll find in Jamaica.

Regardless of your plans while in Jamaica, make a stop at one of the above places for an experience a little different from that of the beaches.

When many people plan a vacation to Jamaica, they usually end up staying in one spot—usually at some fabulous resort on the beach. In doing so, you could be missing so much of the Jamaican culture, as well as other sites on the island. The country is full of adventures, and getting around can be one in itself. If you’ve decided to move around during your vacation, there are some things you should know about traveling and transportation in Jamaica.

When in Jamaica, you have numerous options for getting around. Most tourists take a tour bus or taxi, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can use a rental car, a moped or scooter, and a bicycle. If you don’t have far to go, you can even walk if you want to.

If you choose the tour bus, be aware that they follow designated routes throughout the country and that much of the time, they’re very crowded. Jamaican taxis operate much like anywhere else in the world. Because they don’t use meters, they can be very expensive to use. What you end up paying to get around in these ways will vary, depending on how far you’ll be traveling, as well as which method you’ve chosen to get there.

There are numerous agencies for car rentals, the most popular being Avis, Budget, and Island. Like anywhere else you’d rent a car, you’ll need a valid driver’s license and a credit card. In Jamaica, you drive on the left side of the road, rather than the right, and many of the roads are narrow and very winding.

Drivers in Jamaica like using the horn on their vehicles. They do it to express anger, to let someone know they’re being let in, to indicate right of way, and sometime, they honk the horn for no reason. Keep this in mind when being honked at—it may not be for a negative reason.

Regardless of how you choose to travel around Jamaica, be sure to carry a camera or video camera. You’re guaranteed to see something interesting wherever you go.

Although the island nation of Jamaica is one of the most beautiful in the world, it can be a real nightmare for the innocent tourist, adventurer, explorer or even local residents. You may be wondering what has made this paradise island, the one that gave the world legends such as Bob Marley to be hell. The answer is quite simple; although it is the dream of every tourist, the country has one of the highest rates of criminal activities in the world.

In fact, there was a point when this beautiful island in the Caribbean had the highest crime rate in the whole world! Such is the frighteningly high level of crime in this tiny nation. The commonest criminal activities include murder, kidnapping, carjacking and armed robbery. These activities have become so commonplace, especially in the capital city of Kingston that it has assumed an alarming trend.

However, like every responsible institution, the government of Jamaica has taken necessary measures and steps all aimed at curtailing the evil deeds and activities of the criminally minded elements who want to hold the island to ransom. Measurable progress has been recorded but a lot still needs to be done before the nation is totally rid of crime and criminality.

For the tourists, you are advised to move in groups and never alone, especially in secluded and dark areas. Also, you should not hesitate to contact the local police for help whenever you are in any form of distress. It is also important to know that it is unwise for you to engage in unwarranted displays of affluence, as this will only attract thieves. Driving or strolling late at night even when accompanied should be avoided, and never engage in a fight with anyone, he or she could be a hooligan. Keeping to all these will make your stay on the island more enjoyable.

As it is with other nations of the world, the island nation of Jamaica also has her own story to tell. In all sincerity, the history of Jamaica has been a very eventful one, one full of valuable lessons and admonition. Most historians trace the history of this beautiful island back to thousands of years before Christ. At such times, the island was said to be populated by the indigenous tribes.

These tribes were called the Arawaks and it was they that gave the island the name that it bears until today. It will interest you to know that the name Jamaica was derived from the Arawaki name xaymaca, which means the land of the woods and waters. That is an apt description of the island you might say, considering the tropical nature and geography of the islands.

The Arawaks engaged in agriculture, especially the cultivation of maize and fishing. They lived peacefully and in harmony until the coming of the Europeans. From mainland Europe, the Spanish were the first to set foot on the pristine island in the 15th century. When the legendary Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus saw the island, he confessed that it was one of the most beautiful he had seen. Thereafter, Columbus decided to rename the island Santiago but this attempt was not successful.

The Spanish were brutal lords of the Arawaks and they drove them into slavery and torture. They were required to work extra hard for the benefit of the Spanish invaders. This was so much so that in less than two hundred years, there was virtually no Arawak left on the island. The inhumane treatment of the locals and slaves was to continue even after the British took over as colonial masters. However, as the saying goes, tough times never last, the nation of Jamaica gained independence in 1962 and has been progressing steadily ever since.

From the beginning of time, it has always been the nature of man to move from one place to another.
The fact that the global tourism industry is now worth billions of dollars cannot be put in dispute. In fact, for some nations the economy is solely dependent on tourist dollars. The Caribbean is one hotspot in the global tourism industry and one of the most important players is the tropical island of Jamaica.

Jamaica is a tiny nation situated right in the middle of the Caribbean. Its economy is one that is very much dependent on tourist activities. According to some experts, as much as 50% of the Jamaican economy is based on tourism. This is clearly pointed out when we realize the fact that the island receives over a million tourists every year. Meanwhile, the population of Jamaica itself is just a little under three million.

The government of Jamaica has taken full advantage of the influx of tourists from all corners of the globe and is doing everything necessary to ensure that tourists enjoy their stay and that security is guaranteed at all times. This is quite important especially considering the fact that Jamaica has one of the world’s highest crime rates and that is definitely not good for tourism.

Without undue exaggeration, the island of Jamaica is truly a pearl of tourism and there is little wonder that millions of tourists throng the sunny island every year. What makes Jamaica beautiful and attractive cannot be enumerated. However, it will not be out of place if some of these are mentioned so that the whole issue is made more lucid.

The island of Jamaica is tropical and what this simply means is that there is an ample all-year-round supply of sunshine. Therefore, for those that are lovers of tanning and sunbathing, Jamaica is the place to be. Apart from that, the whispering palms and the exotic beaches are simply too alluring to be ignored. Also, you should not forget the fact that this is the land of reggae!

Culture has been described as the way of life of a people and in real sense; it is the culture that determines a people and what they really are. Of all the nations in the Caribbean, the cultural legacies of Jamaica are among the richest. The culture of this island is so rich that countless legends and folklores are woven around it.

The culture of the Jamaican people can be traced back to the times of the indigenous settlers. They were called the Arawaks or the Tainos. These were the first set of people to inhabit the island and they had their own set of cultural beliefs. These include a well-developed tongue, traditional religion, agricultural practices, communal leadership and other crucial aspects of culture. Unfortunately, the indigenous settlers were to be later exterminated by the European colonists who ruled over the nation.

As at the 21st century, the rich culture of Jamaica can be viewed from various perspectives. This is quite important so as to clarify the issue of culture in such a society. One aspect is religion. Just like neighboring countries like Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Venezuela and Mexico, the nation of Jamaica is one that is full of religious people. The predominant religion in the country is Christianity although there are various sects.

There are also other religions such as Baha’i, Hinduism and Islam although their percentages are quite small. A unique religion that must be mention is Rastafarianism. Named after Ras Tafari Makonen, better known as Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, the movement believes that the Ethiopian emperor was of divine origin and was the physical manifestation of God on earth. There is also the African traditional religion whose adherents cut across all the faiths. Whatever the case, religion is a major driving force in Jamaican culture. Other main aspects are music, dance and sports.

Like human beings, nations too have their own history and the fact is that we can always learn from history. As the saying goes, those that do not learn from history tend to repeat it. In this regard, it is interesting to know that the history of the little island of Jamaica is a chequered one and one that is full of valuable lessons for everyone of us.

Although most people know Jamaica as a tropical island where reggae is in the air every hour of the day and tourists gyrating to the cool calypso rhythm on the spotless beaches. Some others simply know Jamaica as the land of Bob Marley or Usain Bolt.

However, when we dig deeper into the history of this enchanting nation, we see that Jamaica is much more than that. There is more to it than meets the eye. Although Jamaica today is a prosperous nation, it had a more troublesome past. The indigenous Arawaks inhabited Jamaica until the coming of the European colonists who held the island to ransom and turned the people into slaves. As a matter of fact, Christopher Columbus was to claim the island for the Spanish Crown. Those that resisted the colonization were brutally crushed.

As if the torture of Spanish colonization was not enough, the island was to be further colonized by the Empire of Great Britain and that is why it became a member of the Commonwealth until this moment. All through the years of colonization, it is important to know that numerous activists called for independence from the Spanish and British monarchies.

The struggle for independence was not to yield any tangible result until the year 1962 when the nation gained independence after long years of struggle. Ever since, the young nation had to contend with domestic problems especially crime. On the whole, the experience has been very challenging but there is hope.

The nation of Jamaica has been known to millions all over the world as the birthplace of the legendary Bob Marley, the undisputed lord of reggae. Other musicians like Shaggy have also popularized the nation as a musical superpower. However, another dimension has been added to the picture whenever Jamaica is being considered.

In recent times, the exploits of Jamaicans in the world of sports have been so incredible and breath taking that they cannot be overlooked or understated. Some of the fastest runners on the planet trace their origin back to Jamaica. One example that quickly comes to mind is that of Usain Bolt, the unbelievable sprinter that smashed records and set amazing ones in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Another spectacular athlete who is a compatriot of Bolt is Asafa Powell, who also has one of the most impressive records in athletics.

The achievements of these superstars and many others have encouraged the sprouting of various athletic clubs all over the island with various kids seeing these legends as heroes and motivation. However, apart from the feats in athletics, Jamaica is a nation that is also mighty in other areas of sports. The point is that we should not make the mistake of assuming that sports in Jamaica is only about athletics. In real sense, there is more to that.

The sporting activities all over the island of Jamaica cut across various areas. These include soccer, rugby, cricket, swimming, basketball, horseracing and various others. Without any iota of doubt, the people of Jamaica are incorrigible lovers of sports. This is a fact that every tourist has attested to. As a tourist, if you do not like sports before, you will surely do so whenever you have the golden opportunity to visit Jamaica. There are numerous venues and activities that you will surely find interesting.

In the middle of the enchanting Caribbean Sea is the island of Jamaica. Known to the locals as Xaymaca or the Land of Woods and Waters, the island of Jamaica is truly a pearl from paradise. The natural beauty and splendor of the island is unrivaled and this accounts for the millions of tourists that throng the island on an annual basis.

That is the picture that Jamaica presents to the world at the present. However, it is very interesting to know that apart from natural beauty, the history of this magical island is also equally captivating. Historians trace the earliest human settlement on the island to as far back as 5000BC. That length of time no doubt accounts for the spectacular history that Jamaica has.

History also tells us that the earliest indigenous settlers on the islands were the Arawaks. The Arawaks were more of agriculturalists who live off the land. They survived by cultivating subsistence crops such as cassava and maize. They also survived on fishing. It was the Arawaks that gave the name Xaymaca to the island.

The indigenous settlers lived peacefully on the island for centuries until they were “discovered” by the European explorers. The first European to discover the paradise island was the famous Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus who appreciated the beauty and splendor called Jamaica. Because of the deposits of natural resources such as gold, the Spanish took over the island and embarked on a callous colonial expedition. The locals were made to work the gold mines in the searing tropical heat as thousands other were condemned to perpetual slavery.

The inhuman acts of slavery and colonization were to continue until the British Empire took over. Little changed until the island became politically independent on the 6th of August 1962 and was recognized as a sovereign member of the Commonwealth.

It is a known fact that the phenomenon of crime is one that is universal. It is universal in the sense that there is no country on the planet without one form of criminal activity or the other. This is a glaring fact that we have come to live with as humans even in the 21st century where science and technology have taken over everything.

The enchantingly beautiful island of Jamaica is one that is not immune from the criminal activities of the nefarious minds. The case of Jamaica is a unique one in the sense that the beauty of the island has been tarnished by the various crimes and criminality recorded all over the island. The capital city of Kingston is one where the situation is particularly disturbing.

For a country that once had the world’s highest rate of murders, Jamaica is not treating the issue of security lightly. The issue is a very challenging one no doubt but the government is also doing the very best to rein in the dubious activities of the criminals.

Some of the measures taken include the fact that the government has increased the supplies of arms and ammunition to the local police to help combat the rising wave of crime. Apart from the weapons, the government has also supplied the police with increased number of patrol vehicles. In addition, they have also been trained and re-trained in order to be able to face the challenges of modern criminal activities.

The government of Jamaica has also collaborated with various governments, especially those of the United States of America, the Caribbean nations and the nations of Latin America that have united to combat transnational crime. These include drug trafficking, kidnapping and other criminal activities. Although a lot still needs to be done, considerable progress has been made.

According to sociologists, the culture of a people can be defined as their total way of life. Apart from the fact that the whole world sees Jamaica as a tropical paradise. It records over one million tourists on the average every single year. This is more impressive in the face of the fact that Jamaicans themselves number just under three million.

The cultural values of the Jamaicans are some of the richest and most diverse in the world. These cultural habits cut across various spheres of life. These include music, religion, education, sports, history and a lot of other aspects. Even the meals of Jamaica are quite distinct and invitingly exotic.

One aspect of the Jamaican culture that the people are respected for all over the world is that of the music. The music of Jamaica is one that is quite rich and melodious. Several brands of music exist and these include the well-known reggae that has been popularized by the late legend Bob Marley. Other forms of music include ragga (dancehall), ska, calypso and dub music.

Apart from the various musical styles, other aspects of the Jamaican culture include the religious aspects. Jamaica is a nation that is made up of mainly Christians although it is important to know that there are various sects and branches of Christianity. These include Catholicism and Pentecostal. Another unique religion derived from this land is that of Rastafarianism.

Adherents of Rastafarianism are known as Rastafarians. Rastafarians also believe that the late emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I was the personification of God and his physical manifestation on earth. Rastafarians are also known to derive “inspiration” from the use of marijuana. This is a practice that is not in tandem with what a lot of Jamaicans believe in. This is just a bit of the rich cultural paradise called Jamaica.

Jamaica is world famous for its Blue Mountain Coffee brands. But the tiny Caribbean Republic is also well known for its music and entertainment. The most popular genres that are known all over the world include reggae, dub music, and mento. Jamaican music incorporates all off the local musical elements that are present in the tiny country to create a musical fusion of elements. Reggae is particularly well known due to the huge musical influence of Bob Marley who spread the brand of music in the world. Other local artistes like Shaggy also managed to spread the music throughout the world

Mento has also managed to be increasingly popular in the world with several large bands from the tiny state touring the world to spread the music. Popular artistes in the state include Count Lasher, Lord Composer and George Moxey who are widely respected and considered stalwarts of the field. This style of music was hugely popular inside the state but did not last as long as calypso. the style is released and performed inside Jamaica but is waning in popularity in the world.

Ska was another hot musical genre where artistes set wordings to music. Over time, the trend eventually evolved into rap music where artistes set rhymed wordings to music. Local artistes Sir Lord Comic, King Stitt and Count Matchuki became really pouplar and trendy and they started the trend for instrumental music as well. In the later 1960s, producers started to combat rhythm where they would provoke opposing artistes with humorous jabs. Over time, the process became increasingly popular and it was eventually exported to New York as “Toasting.”

Both reggae, ska and mento had a huge influence on British rock where a new genre of music was created. Bands like the Clash, Elvis Costello and the Attraction and The Police were heavily influenced by the music from Jamaica.

Without little doubt, the nation of Jamaica is one of the most beloved in the whole world. The reasons for this are quite varied. One is the fact that it is the nation that gave the world the priceless gift of Bob Marley, the greatest reggae musician that has ever lived. Another is that the nation of Jamaica is one that is one of the pearls of tourism, with unmatched potentialities for tourism.

However, these are real facts when Jamaica is being discussed but there are grim facts that must also be considered when Jamaica is the issue. The nation has one of the highest crime rates not only in the Caribbean but also in the world all over. To many people, Jamaica is one of the most violent nations on earth.

Understandably, this is a serious concern for the Jamaican people and government. Just as any responsible government will react, the Jamaican government has put the necessary measures in place to tackle the soaring crime rates. The capital city of Kingston is one that is notorious for unresolved murders, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnappings, rape, carjacking and many other criminal activities.

For both local residents and the millions of tourists that pour into this tropical paradise every single year, security is a major issue. Tourists are especially targeted since the prevailing belief is that they are always loaded with hard currency especially dollars. Apart from this, quite a number of tourists are quite naive and trusting. In this regard, they are quite easy prey for the criminally minded elements that litter the island of Jamaica.

In order not to fall prey to these acts of insecurity, there are various tips that are useful for both local residents and tourists alike. It is always useful and beneficial to walk together and one should always avoid suspicious areas.

In the middle of the Caribbean lies a pearl of outstanding beauty. To many, this natural wonder is known as the island of Jamaica. The indigenous Jamaicans call their tropical paradise Xaimaca, meaning the Land of the Woods and Waters. Without mincing words, that is clearly a very appropriate name for a lush and spectacular island like Jamaica.

The island nation of Jamaica is a popular one. It is popular in the sense that it is known to most people around the globe. Although it must be emphasized that most people know Jamaica as a nation where reggae originated, the nation of music legends such as Bob Marley and Shaggy. For some others, Jamaica is a country where the late emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I also called Ras Tafari Makonen is being worshipped. This is a thinly-veiled reference to the unique religious movement of the Rastafaris of which Bob Marley himself was one.

However, apart from the reggae and the Rastafaris, there is more to this graceful island of splendor. If not millions of tourist will not turn besiege the place on an annual basis. At this point, it will not be out of place to stress the sheer natural beauty of the island. Because of the fact that Jamaica is located within the Tropics, there is always an ample supply of sunshine throughout the year. At a time like this when Europe is choked with fierce snow, you can understand why Jamaica is the place to be. On the island, you can have an unmatched experience when it comes to sunbathing.

The beaches and waters of Jamaica also remind you of the fact that there is heaven on earth. The feeling that you have while walking on one of those pure white beaches is only one that must be experienced as words cannot capture the real essence. To cap it, try a dive in the crystal clear waters!
