Ambassador Seymour Mullings is Jamaica's seventh Ambassador to the United States of America as well as its Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States. He assumed responsibilities in November of 2001 after decades of service to Jamaica as a parliamentarian and public servant. Prior to his present assignment, Ambassador Mullings served as Jamaica's Deputy Prime Minister from 1991 to 2001,and as Member of Parliament for the constituency of South-East St. Ann for over 30 years. He also served as a government Minister in numerous capacities during his long career. He was Minister of Land and Environment from 2000 to 2001, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2000, and Minister of Agriculture from 1991 to 1994. Ambassador Mullings is a commissioned land surveyor by profession and began his career in 1969 as a Member of Parliament. He has had the distinction to serve as Minister under two separate administrations, the first being that of the late Prime Minister, Michael Manley. A key proponent of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) trade advancement legislation, the Ambassador has been a strong advocate of preserving the Caribbean's competitiveness in the European banana market as well as increasing productivity within the Jamaican agricultural sector. Ambassador Mullings was awarded Jamaica's fourth highest honour,
the Order of Jamaica on October 23, 2001 for his distinguished contribution to
Jamaican politics and government. In addition to his many professional accomplishments
he is also a pianist and a life member of the Jamaican Federation of Musicians.
